Black Mamba Boy was definitely a compelling read and a very strong debut by Nadifa Mohamed. The story which follows Jama on his search to find his father, is one that I am sure many readers will identify with. The story is essentially the journey of young boy filled with endless love and hope. Mohamed tries to encompass the story of her father’s journey during a troubled East Africa, one under Mussolini’s rule and with a story of a lost boy and does so with humour and compassion. If you didn’t read it then do, it is worthwhile journey to embark on with Jama.
This month our book club takes us to the Gold coast, Ghana. We will be reading ‘Cloth Girl’ by Marilyn Heward Mills. ‘Cloth Girl’ was shortlisted for the Costa first book prize in 2006. The book is set in the Gold coast following the outbreak of the second world war as the lives of two very different women is about to cross paths. I'm not sure what this book will entail but I’m looking forward to being surprised.
See you next month.
